I'm prone to terrible sinus infections, and I've found that the congestion draining into my stomach makes my IBS worse. Anyone have that problem? It gives me cramps and gas. I used to think it was just the otc cold medicine I was taking, but now I think it's the actual drainage. When I was younger, the drainage made me nauseated.

H Sharon,

I have chronic sinusitis from allergies and I have noticed the same thing as you. One day I will have the sinus congestion and headache and then when it drains my IBS gets worse. I think that this is why my IBS is way worse in Spring and Fall as that is when my allergies are bad too and things get really congested. I was actually on a website about a year ago that said that the tissue in our nose and sinuses was similar to the tissue in our digestive tracts and was saying that chronic sinus problems can cause IBS. I will have to try and find that again by searching on google for IBS and sinus problems. I will let you know if I find it again.

Do you take any meds for your sinus problems?

Thanks for your response, Cindy. I have allergies, too, and I'm sure that makes me prone to all these infections. I am not currently treating my allergies on a day to day basis, so I guess I don't have the right to complain! ;-)

When I get a bad cold or sinus infection, I find Actifed works okay. There's also a prescrip. decongestant/ expectorant called Medent that I take when the pressure and pain are predominate.

If my insurance weren't so crappy, I'd see an allergist.

Sharon,

Found that website www.wholehealthmd.com/hc/sinusitis/underlying_causes

However, I would not recommend following its eating plan for IBS, they recommend high amounts of INSOLUBLE fiber and don't really mention soluble fiber.

I also suffer from severe sinusitis. It is nothing for me to take large doses of anti-biotics for 30-60 days. My insurance thankfully pays good, so I am taking the allergy injections. I think those anti-b's wreak havoc on my gut, hopefully soon the injections will start to kick in, I am so sick of being sick!!! I take allegra, and rhinocort. They are a huge help!! good luck, gayla

I've expereinced great relief through the Ionic Breeze from Sharper Image as well as the Neti Pot. It provides irrigation for sinuses through saline solution....Also check out this month's Yoga Journal for an article on releif from allergies.

My husband's allergist told him to start using the Neti pot, too. He says it really helps.

I'm interested in trying a Neti pot, but is there any danger you'd inhale water into your lungs?? The thought of pouring water up my nose is a little scary.

I just started using a neti pot this week for my allergies/sinus. It has REALLY helped. I was taking sudafed with tylenol four times a day and now I'm down to once or twice a day. I have one of those BIG neti pots (holds 16 oz). It seems safe. The water goes up one nostril and out the other.

It sounds strange, but if you are suffering from sinus congestion, sinus irrigation is relatively simple and painless. I was just so tired of being drugged out

Hey Girlfriend!

SOOOOO good to see you! I've missed you.

How are you feeling now that you have your IBS under control? I'm so jealous.

How's the gastritis? Is the new med working for you? Are you gonna try to find a different GI or work with your primary (like me)?

Gee it's good to see you back. Stay with us, won't you?

Your friend,
Bev

P.S.: How are the orders? You bogged down in water lilies?
