I'm waiting for the doctor to call me back, but I bet you all will come up with the answer before she calls :-)

I'm thinking that I have managed to go diverticulitis from diverticulosis, thanks to the fact that I didn't pay attention to the dietary guidelines that say "no nuts." I'm not running a fever, but I have really bad lower left quadrant (LLQ) pain and tons of gas. This morning I found the printout that the GI gave me after the colonoscopy, and I also learned that bed rest and a liquid diet are recommended during acute attacks. (Note to self: read what they give you!). Anyhow, I am not in bed but at the PC looking for help. I'll go back shortly after asking a few questions:

1. How long does it take for diverticulitis to subside?
2. Does "liquid diet" mean clear liquids?
3. I also just started acacia fiber -- this should help and not hurt in the long run, right?
4. If I grind up the nuts, are they considered safe?
5. I find heat somewhat comforting -- it won't make it worse, will it ?(does anyone else remember the Waltons episode where John Boy's sister "played nurse" and used a hot water bottle on an appendicitis and made it worse? It always makes me think twice before using one!).

That's it. Thanks everyone!

Hi Chigal,

I have diverticulosis. I didn't know I had it until it turned into diverticulitis and sent me to the hospital, doubled over in pain. The CT scan they gave me discovered the "itis."

Lets see if I can help with some of your questions:

1. "How long does it take for diverticulitis to subside?" As I recall, with the antibiotics they gave me, it's fairly quick. I was better within a day.

2. "Does 'liquid diet' mean clear liquids?" I had juice as well, and as I recall I drank my home made chicken stock (just plain).

3. "I also just started acacia fiber -- this should help and not hurt in the long run, right?" I can't answer this because it was way before I even heard of acacia. However, I didn't take my Citrucel, or ANYTHING, while I was on the course of antibiotics.

4. "If I grind up the nuts, are they considered safe?" This is a controversial issue about nuts being the culprit. You do know that "nuts" includes SEEDS, don't you? Seeds were more difficult for me to give up than nuts. Those damn seeds in tomatoes drive me crazy! I gave up all nuts and all seeds after my SECOND "itis" attack -- they're not worth it.

5. "I find heat somewhat comforting -- it won't make it worse, will it?" I wouldn't think so, but I'm not a doctor. I didn't use heat myself -- really I didn't need to, it seemed to me that the antibiotics gave me almost immediate relief, certainly I felt a lot better than before the antibiotics.

Hope some of this helps. By the way, when I got the second attack, the doc put me on Flagyl. WONDERFUL STUFF! Ask your doc about it when he calls; and hopefully that will be SOON.
