Anyone tried steel cut oats/irish oatmeal?

I tried them this morning. Normally I eat quick oats in the morning without any problem, but surprisingly, I was in pain after I ate those... I'm not sure if it's the oats, it might be something I ate yesterday, but I can't remember anything dangerous...

Also, a lot of people say they find a difference in the flavor of these oats to the usual ones. I didn't see any of that... Maybe I just didn't prepare them right?

What I did was, I soaked them in hot water overnight and then cooked for 10 minutes in the morning (to avoid cooking them for 30 minutes in the morning).

Has anyone else noticed steel cut oats being less tollerable than rolled oats?

Thanks
--J

I cannot eat the steel cut oats. They give me pain and bloating. Rolled oats I eat every day. I rarely eat quick oatmeal

Hi, I ate steel-cut for a while, and found that even when I soaked them in hot water overnight, I still had to cook them for at least 20 minutes in the morning. So I switched to Scottish Oats (Bob's Red Mill) which are more chopped up (and so easier to digest) than the steel-cut ones, but still have that great nutty flavour. They take 10 minutes to cook in the morning, with no pre-soaking. Hope this helps!

They are oats that were not rolled. The ordinary oats, have been steamed, rolled, steamed, toasted, or something like that... That's why they take so little time to cook, because they've already been so much processed.

It's hypothesized that because of the more processing, rolled oats lost some of their flavor and nutrients. That's why steel cut oats are "recommended" (by those who make them of course, the makers of rolled oats recommend rolled oats). People say they also taste nuttier. I didn't really think they taste much nuttier, though.

I just saw them in the store and decided to try them. Now my husband is hooked, LOL, so I either need to figure out how to cook them as to be able to eat them, or cook them for him only. Some people even make them in their crock pots overnight, but I don't have a crock pot (maybe I should buy one...)

Recently I decided to add very low fat oatmeal cookies to my diet. See recipe below (no dairy, no eggs). I used regular oatmeal.

About 5-6 days after I introduced them I started to become unstable. And within 2 days of removing them things settled down.

I think the oatmeal is not getting cooked enough. My next experiment is to either pre-cook regular oatmeal or use quick oats before I use it.

Recipe:

1-1/3 c. regular or quick rolled oats
1 c. white flour
2 tb. light olive oil or canola oil
1 t. baking powder
1/2 t. baking soda
1/2 t. salt
2/3 c. brown sugar
1/3 c. white sugar
1/2 c. water (adjust to for cookie consistancy)
1 t. vanilla
a pinch of cinnamon

Heat Oven to 350 deg. Combine ingredients as usual. Drop onto cookie sheet. Bake 10-12 mins. Makes 40

I am a "C" and when I eat them I am totally regular and oh so happy. I have another friend who is a "C" and can't touch them as they tear her tummy up.

I cook mine in a rice cooker...1/2 c oats to 1 c water. Press the cook button and 20 minutes later they are done. I LOVE steel cut oats...eat them every morning.
